Are you planning a cruise vacation? How exciting! A cruise is the perfect way to relax and explore new places all in one trip. Personally, I think it is hands down one of THE best vacations you can take. But, if you are preparing for your first cruise, it can seem a bit overwhelming. That’s why I’ve put together this ultimate cruise planning checklist to help make your planning process as smooth and stress-free as possible. After going on over a dozen cruises, I have a pretty good idea of all the insider tips and tricks!
Before You Book
- Do your research: Start by researching different cruise lines, ships, and itineraries to find the one that fits your needs and budget. Read reviews from previous passengers and check out websites like Cruise Critic for more information.
- Consider your travel dates: Think about when you want to go on your cruise. Consider the weather, peak travel seasons, and any events you don’t want to miss. Having flexibility in your timeline can help you find the best deal. Cruising during the summer or any school vacation breaks can mean cruise ships are packed with kids.
- Check for discounts and promotions: Look for any discounts or promotions that may be available. Check with your travel agent, the cruise line, or online travel websites.
- Think about your travel group: Are you going solo, with a significant other, or with a group of friends or family? Make sure you choose a cruise that fits your group size and needs.
Booking Your Cruise
- Book early: Booking early can help you secure your preferred cabin, dining time, and shore excursions. Plus, you may be able to take advantage of early bird promotions or free upgrades and add ons. On the other hand, if you live nearby a cruise port, they often have last minute deals as well.
- Read the fine print: Be sure to read the fine print when booking your cruise. Pay attention to details like cancellation policies, what’s included in the price, and any fees that may be added later.
- Get travel insurance: Consider purchasing travel insurance to protect against any unexpected events that may occur during your trip. You can also purchase with a credit card such as the Chase Sapphire that includes some travel insurance and protection.
Preparing for Your Cruise
- Get your passport or travel documents: This one may be obvious or not but either way, having a valid passport is arguably the most important part of any cruise checklist. Make sure your passport or travel documents are up-to-date and ready to go. Some countries require a passport with at least six months validity, so be sure to check the requirements for your destination and don’t wait until the last minute on this one.
- Pack for your trip: Make a list of everything you need to bring and start packing a few days before your trip. Consider the weather, activities, and dress code for your cruise. Some cruises also have formal or theme nights so pack accordingly if you’re into those things!
- Look into shore excursions: Research your ports and see if there are any shore excursions you can’t miss. Book these in advance to ensure you get to do everything you want to do but also know that there are tons of options when you get off the ship the day of too (and often sold at a fraction of the price.)
Onboard Your Cruise
- Explore the ship: Take some time to familiarize yourself with the ship and all it has to offer. Don’t forget to check out the dining options, entertainment, and activities.
- Attend the safety drill: Attend the mandatory safety drill before setting sail. It’s important to know what to do in case of an emergency and this is a required drill for even the most experienced cruisers. Don’t try to skip it – they will find you 😉
- Relax and have fun: Most importantly, relax and have fun! Take in the sights, try new things, and make memories that will last a lifetime.
That’s it! The best part about going on a cruise is that you can do as much or as little as you choose. By following this ultimate cruise planning checklist, you’ll be well on your way to a stress-free and enjoyable cruise vacation. So pack your bags and get ready to set sail on your next adventure!
Happy cruising!
