It’s the most wonderful time of the year! 🎄✨ But seriously, it is. This guide will include almost everything that you don’t want to miss during the festive Christmas markets of Zurich, Switzerland. Starting at the Main Station, we’ll work our way through the city! Zurich transforms into a magical place during the holiday season, and its Christmas markets are the heart of this winter charm. It really is a holiday dream come true and feels like straight out of a Hallmark movie!
Christkindlimarkt at Zurich Main Station
Our first stop is the iconic Christkindlimarkt at Zurich Main Station. Imagine the largest indoor Christmas market in Europe – yes, you read that right! Here, you’ll find loads of festively decorated stalls offering everything from handmade crafts to mouthwatering treats. In the past, the Swarovski tree has been the star of the show as the market’s centerpiece, but it has changed the past two years. I’m a big fan of this year’s tree theme because.. it’s a Lindt chocolate tree (it’s not actually made out of chocolate… although that would be really awesome)! Sometimes there are people handing out free Lindt chocolates so be sure to check that out!
- Must-Try Delights:
- Crepe: Salty or sweet, these are always fresh and delicious!
- Glühwein: Warm up with a cup of mulled wine (red or white) as you stroll through the market. A classic Christmas market drink!
- Hot Chocolate: My personal favorite 😉
Singing Christmas Tree
Now, we mosey down Zurich’s main downtown street, the famous Bahnhofstrasse, and experience the glistening Christmas lights until we arrive at our next stop, the Singing Christmas Tree. Imagine a large Christmas tree structure filled with a choir of singers from all ages, creating a harmonious symphony of holiday tunes. No Zurich Christmas experience is complete without a visit and taking a couple of minutes to listen to some local choir singers. It’s a unique and heartwarming spectacle that captures the spirit of the season.
Winter Wonderland at Sechseläutenplatz
Next on our festive journey is the Sechseläutenplatz, which is transformed into a winter wonderland that really feels magical. This is the largest market in Zurich and if you don’t have a lot of time in Zurich, this is the ONE that you DO NOT want to miss. This Christmas market is best to visit in the evening when it is illuminated by all the lights and the beautiful Christmas tree in the middle. There are plenty of food and beverage options and has cute local vendors selling their products. Don’t be afraid to go up to some of the stands and ask for a sample of local cheese or sausage if they haven’t offered it to you already.
- Can’t-Miss Attractions:
- International Foods: From gyros, empanadas, and pizza to classic Swiss raclette, rösti, and Käsespätzle – the options are overwhelming!
- Fudge Stand: If you have a sweet tooth, be sure to stop by my favorite stand – the English Fudge stand.
Old Town Charms at Niederdorf
As we wind through the charming alleys of the Niederdorf (Zurich’s Old Town), this market is a bit more spread out along the way. Cobblestone streets, historic buildings, and stalls selling handmade crafts create a festive atmosphere that’s quintessentially Zurich.
Märlitram: A Magical Christmas Journey
To add an extra touch of magic to your Zurich Christmas adventure, hop on the Märlitram (fairy tale tram for kids only). This festive tram takes you on a whimsical tour through the city, adorned with sparkling lights and decorations. It’s like riding through a Christmas fairy tale!
Pro Tips for Your Zurich Christmas Market Adventure
- Go Early: Beat the crowds and enjoy the markets at their most magical.
- Dress Warm: Swiss winters can be chilly, so bundle up! Hand warmers are nice to have if you are planning to be at the outdoor markets for a few hours.
- Try Local Treats: Don’t miss out on Swiss specialties like raclette and fondue.
