After living in Zurich for over a year, I have finally created the “must do” list. Zurich, Switzerland is a city that offers a wide range of activities for tourists and locals. From outdoor adventures to cultural experiences and everything in between, there’s always something to see and do in this vibrant city. Here are six must-do activities in Zurich that you won’t want to miss.
1. Explore Lake Zurich
One of the city’s most iconic attractions and my personal favorite, Lake Zurich is the perfect place to go for a leisurely stroll, have a picnic, or go for a swim on a hot summer day. With its stunning views of the surrounding mountains and clear, sparkling waters, Lake Zurich is a must-visit destination for anyone in Zurich. Did you know that most train tickets also work for the boat trips? It’s true and worth the experience as well.
2. Walk Through the Old Town
The Old Town of Zurich, also known as the Niederdorf, is a charming and historic area that is home to a variety of shops, restaurants, and cafes. Whether you’re looking to purchase souvenirs, sample local cuisine, or just take in the sights and sounds of the city, the Old Town is the perfect place to start.
3. Visit the Zurich Zoo
The Zurich Zoo is one of the city’s most popular attractions, and it’s a great place to go for people of all ages. With a wide range of animals, including lions, tigers, and monkeys, the Zurich Zoo is a fun and educational way to spend the day in Zurich. I’ve been to some great Zoos and I’ll be the first to say that this is one of the best there is!
4. Take a Hike in the Uetliberg Mountain
For those who love the great outdoors or just want to see a bird’s eye view of the city, the Uetliberg Mountain is a must-visit. With its stunning views of the city and surrounding countryside, the Uetliberg is the perfect place to go for a hike, a picnic, or just a leisurely stroll. You can also walk from the Felsenegg to Uetliberg (and vice-versa) for about a 1.5 hour walk.
5. Visit the Lindenhof
If you’re looking for another great view that’s right in the heart of the city, this one is for you. The Lindenhof is one of Zurich’s most historic neighborhoods, located on a hill overlooking the city and the Limmat River. The Lindenhof is famous for its stunning views of the city and the surrounding mountains, and is the perfect place to take in the panoramic vistas. Colin and I love to have a picnic here on a nice day. The neighborhood is also home to several historic buildings, including the Roman castle ruins, which date back to the 1st century. Take a stroll through the quiet streets of the Lindenhof, and enjoy a peaceful moment in the heart of Zurich.
6. Indulge in Swiss Chocolate
Last but not least, no trip to Switzerland is complete without indulging in some of the country’s famous chocolate. The Lindt Chocolate Experience in Kilchberg has a chocolate tour that is fun for all ages! Whether you prefer dark, milk, or white chocolate, there is a chocolate fountain for everyone to enjoy during your time!
