Layovers can be a great way to see a new city, that is if you have enough time of course! Luckily, the city and downtown area of Zurich is only about a 15-minute train ride from the airport so if you find yourself with enough time, I’d say about 4+ hours, then I would highly recommend venturing out if you can!
Arrival in Zurich
So, picture this – you’re soaring through the Swiss skies, and your plane gently touches down in Zurich. You’ve got a layover, but who said layovers have to be boring? Not me!
- Tip #1: Airport to City Center Express: Zurich’s train system can get you from the airport to the city center (Train stop: Zurich HB) in less than 15 minutes. That’s much closer than other large airports are to certain cities. This is a huge benefit for a little layover expedition!
Coffee & Croissants in Old Town
The moment you step into Zurich’s Old Town, you’ll find cobblestone streets, charming cafes, and a view of the Limmat River – it’s the perfect setting for a cozy layover and a delicious treat.
- Must-Try Café: Head to Café Schober for a coffee with beautiful ambiance indoors. Pair it with a buttery croissant or gipfeli, and you’re officially living the Swiss dream. If the weather is nice though, I would recommend picking a place such as Franzos or Cafe Grande where you can enjoy the outdoor seating.
Swiss Chocolate Indulgence 🍫
You can’t visit Switzerland without indulging in some world-famous Swiss chocolate.
- Tip #2: Läderach Chocolatier: If you’re into the *fancy* things, definitely check out Läderach Chocolatier. Their heavenly creations are luxurious here in Switzerland. Pro tip: grab a box or a bar for the road – you’ll thank me later.
Lake Zurich Stroll
Feeling the need to stretch your legs? Head to Lake Zurich for a stroll along the beautiful promenade. The blue water, swans gliding by, and the distant view of the Alps – it’s quite literally like a scene from a postcard.
- Tip #3: More Panoramic Views: Take the steep street up to the Lindenhof Hill for panoramic views of the river, Grossmünster, and city. It’s the perfect spot for your Instagram post. 😉
Swiss Cuisine Delight
Let’s talk food. Zurich boasts a culinary scene that’s a delightful fusion of Swiss tradition and international flair.
- Must-Try Dish: My personal favorite – Älpler Macaroni. Not your thing? My husband, Colin, would recommend a bratwurst from Sternen takeaway grill. The line is worth it!
Window Shop at Bahnhofstrasse
A walk down Bahnhofstrasse takes you directly down to the Zurich Lake so you could likely see it all if you put your walking shoes on! One thing I love about Zurich is how walkable it really is, you can see a lot in a short period of time.
- Tip #4: Bahnhofstrasse: You’ve got to have a look at the world’s 3rd most expensive shopping street in the world. Nearly all of the big designer brands have a storefront on this street.
Heading Back to the Airport
Leave enough time and hop back on the train to the airport so that you don’t miss your flight, obviously. But how great is it to experience another destination during a layover rather than sitting at the airport for hours on end??
- Tip #5: Souvenir Shopping: Grab some Swiss souvenirs in the city at Teddy’s Souvenir shop or one of the many places at the airport. In my (very) humble opinion, the M-Budget chocolate bars at Migros – a large Swiss grocery store – are fantastic for the price of only 50 Rappen or approx. 55 cents. Yes, $0.55 USD.
Final Thoughts
So, there you have it and now maybe you can turn a layover in Zurich into a mini Switzerland adventure. From coffee in Old Town to chocolate indulgence and a cultural pitstop, your layover just became the highlight of your journey.
Safe travels and may all your layovers be as unexpected and amazing as this one in Zurich! ✈️🏞️
