If you’re someone who loves to travel and explore different cultures, then this article is for you.
I grew up and lived in Texas for the majority of my life, and then I moved to Switzerland. Talk about a big change, am I right? These two places are incredibly different in terms of culture, lifestyle, and environment. I was fascinated by the differences and love sharing my experience with those who are curious about what it’s like to live in these two countries.
Cost of Living
Let’s start with the cost of living. Switzerland is known for being one of the most expensive countries in the world, and it’s no joke. The prices for housing, food, and transportation are all higher compared to the USA, especially when coming from Texas. But, the high cost of living in Switzerland is balanced out by the country’s exceptional standard of living. Switzerland has world-class healthcare (which is also very expensive) and education systems, as well as a strong economy.
In the USA, the cost of living varies depending on where you live. Cities like New York and San Francisco are incredibly expensive, while smaller cities have a lower cost of living.
Lifestyle
The pace of life in Switzerland is relaxed and peaceful. The Swiss value a healthy work-life balance, and they take their time to enjoy the beautiful scenery and clean air. Switzerland is also very environmentally friendly, with a strong emphasis on sustainability and preserving the natural environment. For reference, bags at the grocery store are not free so most people bring their own reusable bags with them everywhere.
In the USA, the lifestyle is fast-paced, with a “go-getter” attitude. People in the USA tend to work more overall. They have more of a “work hard, play hard” mentality and it’s not unusual to get 2 weeks or less of paid time off from work.
Nature
Switzerland is a nature lover’s dream come true. The stunning mountain ranges, pristine lakes, and rolling hills make it a paradise for outdoor enthusiasts. Switzerland is also home to some of the best ski resorts in the world, so it’s a popular destination for ski trips. Personally, I’m more into sledding.
The USA is a vast country with diverse geography. From the Grand Canyon to the Everglades, the USA also offers a range of natural landscapes that are perfect for nature lovers. However, coming from Texas, it was too hot to spend much time outside in the summer and the geography was nothing super special outside of DFW.
Food
Swiss cuisine is hearty and filling, often based on potatoes and cheese. Swiss chocolate is world-famous, and it’s a must-try when visiting the country. And the bread here is absolutely divine. Super fresh everyday and it’s all so good, you can’t go wrong.
There are foods that I miss from back home though. The USA has a diverse food culture and I can’t find any good Mexican food here like the Tex Mex from Texas. Since ranch dressing/dip is non existent in Europe, I’ve grown to love the french dressing here in Switzerland – much different from the french dressing in America. With that being said, I did bring back a seasoning to make my own ranch here for when I have a strong craving!
Public Transportation
As surprising as it may be, I do not missing owning a car. Switzerland has one of the most efficient public transportation systems in the world that includes trains, buses, and trams. The public transportation system in Switzerland is punctual, clean, and safe.
In the USA, public transportation varies depending on where you live. Some cities have well-developed systems, while others rely heavily on cars. It wouldn’t be super realistic to not have a car where I grew up in Texas because there is no public transportation. Whenever we move again, I hope to live in another city with great public transportation options.
Conclusion
In conclusion, Switzerland and the USA are both unique and special in their own ways. Switzerland offers a relaxed and peaceful pace of life, surrounded by stunning natural landscapes, while the USA offers a fast-paced and diverse culture, with a strong emphasis on work and play. Whether you’re a nature lover or a city-dweller, there’s something for everyone in these two countries.
