Ah, Paris! I dreamed about going to Paris for years and with it being a four hour train ride away from Zürich, I had no excuse not to go. If you’re planning a trip to the French capital, get ready to immerse yourself in a world of beauty, culture, and delicious pastries. In this guide, I’ll take you through some of the top things to do in Paris – especially if you’re a first timer, based on my personal experiences.
Stroll Down the Champs-Élysées
No visit to Paris is complete without a leisurely walk along the famous Champs-Élysées. This iconic avenue is lined with luxury shops, charming cafes, and impressive landmarks. Here’s what you can expect:
- Shopping: Explore the flagship stores of renowned brands, such as Louis Vuitton and Chanel, and indulge in some retail therapy.
- Cafés and Restaurants: Take a break and enjoy a cup of coffee or a delightful meal at one of the many quaint establishments along the avenue.
- Arc de Triomphe: Admire the majestic Arc de Triomphe at the western end of the Champs-Élysées, a monument that honors the fallen soldiers of France.
Experience the Eiffel Tower: Day and Night
The Eiffel Tower is undoubtedly the most iconic symbol of Paris. Make sure to visit this architectural marvel during the day and at night to witness its magical transformation. Here’s what you can do:
- Daytime: Climb up to the top of the tower or take the elevator for breathtaking panoramic views of the city. We also opted to see it from multiple angles around the city throughout our trip
- Nighttime: Return to the Eiffel Tower after sunset to witness its mesmerizing light show. It sparkles on the hour for five minutes. This was a really magical experience but be prepared for crowds. And if you are going around June like we did, beware that it doesn’t get dark until after 10pm making the first lighting at 11pm.
Indulge in Heavenly Pastries
Paris is renowned for its exquisite pastries, and let me tell you – it did NOT disappoint. In fact, some of our meals were made up of breads and sweet treats. You won’t want to miss the opportunity to savor these delicious delights. Here are a couple must-visit patisseries:
- Ladurée: Known for its delectable macarons, Ladurée is a Parisian institution. Treat yourself to an assortment of colorful macarons that will transport your taste buds to heaven.
- Boulangerie Marius: This bakery was near our hotel and we ended up here several times because it had a great selection of delectable pastries. Don’t miss the chance to try their huge eclairs!
Visit the Wall of Love and Montmartre
For a touch of romance and artistic inspiration, head to Montmartre. This charming neighborhood has a bohemian atmosphere and is home to the famous Wall of Love (Le Mur des Je t’aime). Here’s what you can do:
- Wall of Love: Located in the Jehan-Rictus Garden, the Wall of Love features the words “I love you” in over 250 languages. It’s the perfect spot for a romantic photo or a heartfelt moment.
- Sacré-Cœur: Climb the steps to the magnificent Sacré-Cœur Basilica, which offers stunning views of the city. Explore the lively streets of Montmartre, filled with artists, cafés, and charming shops.
Admire the Beauty of Notre-Dame
Although tragically damaged in a fire, Notre-Dame Cathedral remains a symbol of Parisian history and architectural grandeur. While it undergoes restoration, you can still appreciate its beauty from the outside. Here’s what you can do:
- Photography: Capture the intricate details of the cathedral’s facade, including its stunning rose windows and Gothic architecture.
- Seine River Cruise: Take a boat tour along the Seine River for a unique perspective of Notre-Dame and other famous landmarks. The river cruise allows you to appreciate the city’s beauty from a different vantage point.
Explore the Louvre
No visit to Paris is complete without a visit to the Louvre, one of the world’s largest and most famous art museums. Here’s what you can do:
